Welcome to CAFI
Join us in promoting positive change in our local food system in White Rock/South Surrey.
About Us
Community Action Food Initiative (CAFI) is a vehicle to promote, innovate and support positive change throughout our local food system.
CAFI works toward addressing and challenging the systemic inequities that exist in the food system.
Vision
CAFI's vision is food security for all residents of South Surrey and White Rock through a sustainable and resilient food system.
CAFI envisions an integrated and resilient local sustainable food system that is accessible, culturally preferable and affordable for all members of the community. CAFI believes the right to food is a fundamental human right.
Mission
CAFI’s mission is to build networks that work towards creating resilient, ecologically sustainable, socially just food systems that honour food sovereignty.
History
In the fall of 2021, a group of community stakeholders concerned about food security issues on the South Surrey/White Rock Peninsula came together to discuss the disconnect between partner organizations who are supporting emergency food service for the community. These conversations grew from the needs exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. It was determined that food insecurity is an urgent and complex issue that requires deep collaboration among diverse stakeholders and community perspectives to address.
Although there is an existing food security table in Surrey, Seeds of Change Surrey (SOCS), the South White Rock Peninsula community recognized the need for a separate committee that addressed the unique needs and population of the Peninsula. With the support of Peace Arch Hospital Foundation, A Rocha Canada was able to take the lead in bringing together a collaborative community food security table. CAFI aims to build upon the work and partnership done by SOCS as a sister-community table.
